Cheap (sometimes Free) Things To Do In New York City

New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world. It's no wonder New Yorkers need to find ways to limit their spending, especially when is comes to entertainment. We can't always afford that $12 martini. Nonetheless, it is the city that never sleeps, so we are always looking for something fun to do. The following list is the top-five inexpensive (sometimes free) things to do in New York City.

  • Improvisational Comedy. On Sunday nights the Upright Citizen's Brigade (www.ucb.com) performs long form Improvisational comedy for free at 9:30 with possible guests from SNL, The Conan O'Brian Show and Second City. The People's Improv Theater (www.thepit-nyc.com) offers the same kind of deal on Wednesday nights. If these nights don't work for you, no worries, both theaters have multiple shows every night for $5 or $10.
  • Museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (http://www.metmuseum.org/), or The Met for the NY savvy, and Natural History Museum (http://www.amnh.org/) have a suggestion donation, which means you can explore these museums for as little or as much as you can afford. The MOMA is usually a $20 entrance free, but they have free Fridays (www.Moma.org).
  • Theater. Tourists flock to TKTS for half price tickets where they will still end up paying $50 or $60 for the long running "Chicago, " or some equally tired Broadway play, after waiting in line (especially fun in the rain). I recommend Theatermania.com for discount tickets. Theater lovers should join Gold Club, a subdivision of Theatermania. For $99 a year, you are consistently offered extremely discounted and complementary tickets all year-round to some of the best Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway plays to grace the stage. The company even throws in a free pair of tickets to a Broadway play just for signing up, so you end up making that $99 back instantly.
  • Seasonal. In the summer, go see a free movie in Bryant Park every Monday night (www.bryantpark.com). In the winter, Ice skate in Bryant park (www.thepondatbryantpark.com). Admission is free. If you have your own skates or a lock for a locker, bring them. Rentals cost $12 and locks cost $9.
  • Television shows including The Late Show with Letterman, The Daily Show, and SNL offer free tickets to their tapings. The wait can be up to a year on the more popular tapings, but if you're an early bird, you can line up at Rockefeller Center to see the Today Show.
